In the course of the industrial revolution, steam engines were introduced into factories in the 19th century. However, many steam boilers could not withstand the stresses, resulting in numerous boiler explosions with casualties and injuries.
On October 31, 1872, entrepreneurs chaired by the textile manufacturer Gustav Schlieper [de] independently founded the "Association for the Supervision of Steam Boilers in the Districts of Elberfeld and Barmen". Elberfeld-Barmen (today Wuppertal) was the first large industrial urban area in continental Europe. Further associations were founded in Koblenz (July 6, 1873), Aachen (November 17, 1873), and Mönchengladbach (April 1, 1874).[2] The goal of the associations was to minimize the explosion risk of steam boilers by supervising... These associations were subsequently entrusted by the German Empire with the task of conducting sovereign safety inspections. On April 1, 1877, 80 steam boiler operators in the Rhineland merged to form the "Rhenish Steam Boiler Inspection Association Cologne-Düsseldorf" (DÜV) headquartered in Düsseldorf.[3] Towards the end of the 19th century, the motorization in Germany began.
The first driving permit in Germany was issued in 1888 to Carl Benz, the inventor of the automobile. From 1900, the DÜV inspected the first motor vehicles and conducted driving license tests. With increasing motorization, on September 29, 1903, Prussian ministerial decree introduced the first fundamental, nationwide regulation of motor vehicle driver examinations. Experts of the DÜV were recommended for the tests.[4] On April 1, 1909, the Rhenish Steam Boiler Association split into two independent associations, the Rhenish D.Ü.V. Düsseldorf-Essen and the D.Ü.V.
Cologne.[2] Due to further industrial society technologization, in 1918 the DÜV expanded its activities to mining and energy sectors. In 1936, the Rhenish DÜV became the "Technical Inspection Association Cologne", or TÜV Cologne. The license to conduct driver examinations had to be given up in 1940 to engineers of the National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK); only in 1950 was TÜV allowed to conduct driving tests again.[4] TÜV Rheinland Berlin Brandenburg Pfalz e.V. They show how safety culture comes to life through awareness, responsibility, and practical improvements. One story comes from Tobias Winzen. He is an elevator inspection expert. During elevator inspections, different hazards can arise – especially when checking elevator ropes.
If inspectors get too close to the moving traction sheave, fingers could get caught or crushed. ➡️ With his background as a development engineer, Tobias came up with a solution. He designed a 3D-printed inspection rod with built-in safety features to create more distance from moving parts during inspections. ➡️ He built the prototype himself using a CAD program and a 3D printer, tested it with colleagues, and improved the design based on their feedback. Once the final version was ready, he submitted the idea through TÜV Rheinland’s idea management system. Turns out: His idea is now being implemented.
By doing this, Tobias has made his own work and the work of his colleagues safer. During ABS testing on a vehicle with race-optimized but EU-certified tires, the car started to skid. To investigate further, the team tested it on basalt and ceramic surfaces, which are very slippery. During braking, the vehicle completely lost control and spun. All drivers, including Bálint, have training and the appropriate driving licenses, so he was able to handle the car safely after the spin. Nevertheless, the situation was a bit scary at the beginning. ➡️The incident taught Bálint and the team that routine safety measures alone are not enough.

While wearing a helmet is mandatory, the tropical climate often made people reluctant to use it. Stefan noticed that some colleagues were arriving at the office without one and saw an opportunity to raise awareness. Together with the team, he launched the Melon Campaign.🍉🪖 Inspired by a demonstration video, a watermelon protected by a helmet is dropped from height and remains intact – a simple but powerful way to... The campaign was complemented by practical motorcycle training, where colleagues learned how to handle difficult situations on the road and to be more aware of potential risks during their ride. Today, the impact is visible: colleagues no longer arrive at the office without wearing their helmets. And since the campaign started, there have been no commuting accidents.

She’s a test and safety engineer at TÜV Rheinland. At the performance test bench, the noise was so high that hearing protection was necessary, but it made team communication almost impossible.
