Plant genetic resources are central to the study and harnessing of biological diversity. At the heart of the Genebank department is the Federal Ex situ Gene Bank, representing one of the world’s largest germplasm collections, with a current of holding of 151,348 accessions. The mandate of the department is to conserve agrobiodiversity and also to provide the research community with plant genetic resources; the collection is dispersed over three sites, namely Gatersleben, Groß Lüsewitz and Malchow. The Gene Bank has gained a global reputation as a pioneer in the conservation and quality management of plant germplasm and, over the more than 70 years which have passed since its foundation, has... In addition to the accessions conserved in the form of seed, the Gene Bank also maintains one of the world’s largest cryo-collections of vegetatively propagated plant species; it also curates a herbarium comprising over... In the department Genebank the research focus is directed to improving the conservation management of genetic resources, which mostly involves an exploration of the biological and biochemical processes affecting the long term storage of...

The scientific focus of its utilisation-related research activity is the analysis of the genomes of some of our most important crop species, specifically wheat, barley and rye. Of particular interest are the molecular basis of evolution and speciation and the identity of the drivers of intraspecific diversity, since these are expected to provide important insights into the adaptation of crop plants... An important contribution is made by the systematic acquisition of DNA sequence from sub-collections of each of the species alongside analyses of the accessions’ phenotype; this activity fits with the continuing expansion of the... Research activities within the Genebank Department take place in the Genomics of Genetic Resources (GGR), Genebank Documentation (DOK), Resources of Genetics and Reproduction (RGR), Cryo and Stress Biology (CSB), Satellite Collections North (TEN), Experimental... The genetic diversity found within used and usable flora is of incalculable environmental and economic value and is essential for the future of plant breeding in agriculture and horticulture. The components that result in this diversity are also significant for the production of food, medicines and raw materials.

Political and legal framework conditions in the form of international agreements (Convention on Biological Diversity, Nagoya Protocol and International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture), as well as European and national... In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) is responsible for implementing this strategic goal. The Information and Coordination Centre for Biological Diversity (IBV) of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) coordinates strategies for the conservation and use of plant genetic resources. The IBV also directs the National Inventory on Plant Genetic Resources in Germany (PGRDEU). One of the methods of conserving biological diversity is conserving plant genetic resources in ex situ plant collections. A number of gene banks were established for this purpose.

Information about existing gene banks and relevant institutions in Germany are published in the genetic resources information system (GENRES) of the BLE. The Federal Plant Variety Office coordinates the German Gene Bank for Ornamentals and is a partner in the gene bank network for roses and coordination centre for the German Gene Bank for Rhododendrons, as... It contributes to the conservation of established plant species in the gene bank networks for fruit crops and vines. “The Gene Keys speak to all humans, regardless of culture or creed. I believe this is the reason why they are spreading so widely, so quickly, into so many languages. All languages emerge from the same DNA and are ultimately derived from a universal language woven from light.

This unifying language cannot be learned but must be embodied in a high and virtuous ideal that is lived on a daily basis. For this reason, the greatest focus for our multi-lingual translators is to embody the teachings as white light. Only then can we translate the living words into the spectrum of beautiful rainbow colours of each mother language…” The Gene Keys are spreading quickly across the globe, with new translations and resources emerging continuously. Here is a current list of the languages and officially translated Gene Keys works available. We invite you to stay connected by signing up on each language page to be notified when new content is available.

Gene Keys are mindfully using artificial intelligence for assisting in some aspects of translations within our website, courses, apps and synthesis database. We are aiming to balance empowering people worldwide with faster translated content, new resources, and interactive features, while also honouring the unique precision of the Gene Keys language as supported by our Official Translators... Translations of books as core teachings have been, and will continue to be, translated in full by human translators. Our website, courses, and apps will continue to contract translation editors to ensure a human touch.

The Federal Ex situ Gene Bank is one of the world's largest plant germplasm collections, both in terms of the botanical diversity represented and the number of accessions held: currently its holding comprises 151,775... The Federal Ex situ Gene Bank is deeply integrated into the research structure of the IPK. It is an integral part of the research department "Genebank". The core responsibilities of the Federal Ex situ Gene Bank are to collect, conserve and characterise its plant genetic resources and to conduct research and development relevant for plant genetic resources conservation. The bulk of the collection is stored as seed, housed in cold rooms maintained at -18°C, under which conditions seed viability typically lasts several decades.

Materials not able to be stored as seed are either maintained as permanent crops in the field, subjected to in vitro culture or cryopreserved. The latter procedure, which involves storage under liquid nitrogen at -196°C, is applied to over 2,500 accessions, including 2,133 of potato. The collection is spread over three sites: the main site is on the Gatersleben campus, while the other two are located in Malchow (oil and fodder crops) and Groß Lüsewitz (potato). Germination tests are carried out on a regular basis as a quality control measure. Multiplication/rejuvenation is carried out either under glass or in the field, with emphasis placed on maintaining the homogeneity of each accession. Around 8,000 entries are grown out every year.

In addition to its living collection, the Federal Ex situ Gene Bank also curates a herbarium comprising 450,400 specimens, 110,394 reference seed and fruit samples and 58,559 cereal/grass spikes. Since 1948, users based in both Germany and elsewhere have been supplied with over 1.1 million samples. The main content of this page starts here In Germany there are numerous genebanks in which the diversity of cultivated plants is preserved, from the seed sample to the entire plant. The following pages provide an overview of the German genebanks. There are several genebanks in Germany, some of which were only founded in recent years.

The genebanks listed below apply the material exchange standards of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and provide material for research, breeding and training. All genebanks have information systems which are accessible online and in which the conditions for access to the material are presented in a transparent manner. The Federal Central Genebank for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops is located at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben. It conserves over 150,000 seed samples of nearly 3,000 different species. The German Genebank for Grapevine has the goal of preserving the diversity of grape varieties in Germany in the long term. The focus of conservation is on German varieties and varieties with a socio-cultural, local or historical connection to Germany.

Nachdem du deinen persönlichen Gene Keys Guide erworben hast, bekommst du eine Rechnung. Nach spätetestens 3-5 Werktagen schicke ich dir deinen Guide per E-Mail zu. The provision of information, descriptions and photos of the collections is an essential task of the German Gene Bank for Ornamentals. The DGZ database for the Gene Banks for Vegetatively and Seed Propagated Ornamentals and databases for Rhododendrons, Roses and the Plant Collection Network were set established this purpose: Various search options and filter options enable targeted queries. The results and photos can be downloaded as a PDF or CSV file.

Interested parties can obtain plant material or seed from gene bank accessions if available. Please contact the coordination centre of the respective gene bank or subnetwork.
