Stryker was hit by a severe “wiper” cyberattack linked to an Iranian-affiliated group (Handala) on Wednesday, resulting in global network shutdowns and data destruction.
Stryker’s flagship Mako SmartRobotics system, which assists surgeons in performing highly precise joint replacements, was among the company’s products impacted by the attack. Because the multi-million dollar robotic arms of the Mako system require constant software interfacing, specific disposable surgical attachments, and network connectivity, the IT blackout threatened to postpone surgeries, cyber experts say. The attack reportedly affected 200,000 devices across 61 countries. Kaiser Permanente with hospitals in Vacaville and Vallejo uses the Mako system and when asked Thursday if the cyberattack had impacted any of its procedures or operations a spokesperson said “We have engaged Stryker... NorthBay Health uses the Mako system at its Fairfield hospital. A spokesperson said the healthcare provider was “aware of the reported cyber incident involving Stryker and are monitoring the situation closely.
At this time, there is no indication that our equipment or systems have been impacted.” Mako Networks helps C-store brands modernize their connectivity infrastructure to enhance security and reliability. Designed to address the specific challenges of distributed enterprises and distributed retail enterprises, this dynamic solution from Mako Networks can be customized with a broad range of products and services to accommodate the requirements... The Mako System consists of two main parts: the Mako Central Management System (CMS) cloud-based network management application and a range of managed network devices designed to be installed at distributed locations or virtualized... The Mako devices cannot be configured locally and are only managed using the Mako CMS, a key feature of the system that protects these devices from both accidental and malicious local misconfiguration. All private traffic is protected by Mako VPN Cloud SD-WAN tunnels. No traffic traverses the Mako CMS and no single path is required, meaning your network can be designed with full redundancy and no single point of failure. Automated software and firmware updates ensure the entire system remains up to date and secure.
The Mako System evolved as we came to understand the shortcomings of the solutions that were previously available to distributed retail enterprises. Implementing and demonstrating PCI DSS compliance was difficult at a single retail site, let alone a chain of multiple regional or even global sites. Acquiring an acceptable level of data privacy meant expensive MPLS installations and maintenance. Deploying more sites meant introducing more potential points of failure for security and reliability. Scaling up or down was disorganized, with different employees, third-party vendors, broadband carriers and environmental conditions involved at each site. By listening to early customers, including major petroleum brands, Mako Networks has developed a solution to address these issues that can benefit distributed enterprises in any industry.
We are still listening today to continuously improve the Mako System, ensuring it remains a comprehensive all-in-one solution. The Mako CMS is the cloud application through which all network devices are configured, deployed and managed. It is a “single pane of glass” user interface, available to authorized users at any time on any device with a web browser and an Internet connection. Configuration changes are applied in near real-time, with alerts generated for key events, such as WAN failover. Templating reduces deployment time and simplifies maintenance. A powerful suite of reports and diagnostics provides insight into the health and performance of every device, the circuits that connect them and the overall network.

It is a “single pane of glass” user interface, with multi-factor authentication and role-based access available to authorized users at any time, 24/7, on any Internet-connected device with a web browser. Configuration changes are applied in near real-time, with alerts generated for key events, such as WAN failover. Templating significantly reduces deployment time and simplifies maintenance by applying common configurations, such as firewall rules, to thousands of distributed enterprise sites at once. Easily connect sites to a resilient, enterprise-grade Mako VPN Cloud with just a few clicks. A powerful suite of reports and diagnostics provides insight into the health and performance of every device, the circuits that connect them and the overall network.
