You can enable it under the "View" menu (fifth item) or press opt-cmd-F. It does seem to disappear when you switch views but, strangely, not always.

I think it's stupid that it's hidden... why wouldn't you want it available all the time. I'm trying to find a way to make it "sticky", hence the reason I found this thread. If anyone knows how to make it permanent please let me know.
