IFP School is part of IFP Energies Nouvelles, a public body conducting research and offering master-level courses in energy and sustainable mobility. Every year, it awards degrees to 500 young people from all around the world. To spread its expertise as widely as possible, IFP School runs two free MOOCs offering certificates: The MOOCs use a proven digital and interactive educational approach, and are accessible on computer, tablet or cellphone. They are aimed at individuals with two years of higher education, be they students, professionals or, more broadly, anyone interested in the challenges and innovative solutions of the energy transition and sustainable mobility. Over the course of four or five weeks, participants divide their time between short videos by experts, downloadable worksheets, discussion forums and serious games to achieve the free certificate.
Bonus materials and an augmented reality i-book are offered for further learning. The first session in 2019 attracted great interest, which spurred IFPEN to run the course again. Additionally, the certification rates were much higher than that of the average MOOC, which is between 5% and 10%. The Energy Transition MOOC sparked growing interest from various players in the sector (students, representatives from industry, finance and insurance, public players, etc.). The bonus interviews with professionals and examples of industrial projects were particularly popular.
A third session of this MOOC is planned for early 2021. As for the Sustainable Mobility MOOC, the next session will start in November 2020. Total Foundation supports these two MOOCs as part of its commitment to youth inclusion and education, whereby it aims to promote high-quality training that is available to everyone. In an effort to let a wider public tap into its wealth of knowledge, in early 2019 IFP School launched the MOOC “Energy Transition: Innovation Towards a Low-Carbon Future”.
Available to anyone, both online and via cellphone, the free course sought to inform students and professionals alike about energy transition challenges and the innovations shifting this field towards a decarbonized energy mix. The first edition saw 26,000 people in 130 countries participate. On the back of this success, IFP School has prepared a second iteration of the MOOC. Over the course of five weeks, participants will follow the classes in short-video format, taught by twelve or so experts. Topics include the global energy landscape and its development, how renewable energies fit into the energy mix, carbon capture and storage, energy storage and efficiency, and bio-based products and biofuels. The MOOC is intended for all individuals at university level and above, and requires roughly three hours of weekly study to receive the free certificate.
IFP School has launched its new MOOC "Energy Transition: Innovation Towards a Low-Carbon Future" which begins on March 18. Jean-Pierre Deflandre, project manager, tells us more about this new free and certifying online training course supported by Total Foundation and Tuck Foundation. Why a new MOOC after the success of the previous one on the Oil and Gas chain? IFP School's various master programs are evolving to better prepare students to take part in the energy transition once they begin to work for their future employers. This new MOOC fully embodies this transformation, as does the the latest one to date entitled " Tomorrow’s Mobility: Sustainable Technologies for the Automotive Industry." What are the strategic goals of this new MOOC?
This MOOC is a huge educational challenge because it covers a wide range of subjects. Of course, it does not cover all aspects of energy transition nor mitigation and adaptation measures to global warming. Our main goal is to raise awareness among students and young professionals about the energy issues and technical challenges they will face in order to contribute to a more sustainable world. Supported by Total Foundation and Tuck Foundation, the best research and teaching experts from IFPEN and IFP School have come together to provide, in our latest MOOC, the keys to a realistic energy mix... I've done the other one from Total/IFP (from exploration to distribution) and may recommend it to everyone who has a little knowledge of oil&gas and petrochemical industry. It was not my first mooc so i could compare to other moocs.
I hope that a new one will be great as well. toujours d’excellente facture les mooc IFP avec le niveau academique requis par les enjeux, le lien industriel garant de credibilité et une pédagogie adaptée avec jeux, serieux vulgarisation encore un beau rendez-vous qui s'offre...
