This set the stage for modern consumer advocacy and legal protections worldwide. In 1983, the consumer movement formally designated March 15 as World Consumer Rights Day to mobilize action and solidarity. The date was chosen specifically to commemorate Kennedy’s speech. Since then, the observance has grown into an international campaign coordinated by Consumers International, a federation representing over 200 consumer groups.

It ensures that safety remains a priority, preventing hazardous or substandard products from remaining on the market without accountability. By promoting transparency, the observance helps combat misleading advertising and hidden fees that can drain household finances. It empowers people to speak up when they receive poor service or faulty goods, reinforcing the idea that the consumer voice is a necessary check on business practices.

In our global digital marketplace, product safety has fast become a critical issue of concern – impacting lives, consumer trust and the global economy. According to a recent Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) review, 87% of recalled or banned products are still available online. In addition, many countries do not have sufficient legal frameworks in place to help protect society from poor product safety. It is an issue affecting us all, every day, across all continents, and with a disproportionate toll on consumers in vulnerable circumstances and in low-income countries. It can also pose a public health issue and a development challenge – contributing to pollution and the waste of valuable resources. Upon consultation with our Members and partners we are delighted to focus our World Consumer Rights Day 2026 theme on ‘Safe Products, Confident Consumers’.

We invite all consumer advocates to help address the issues that result from poor quality products, and to rally with us on March 15, raising awareness and action for consumers. We will build on the growing success of our past campaigns, convene a global discussion around the top issues in product safety, raise visibility of Member activities on the issue and build momentum to... S. Congress on March 15, 1962, when he officially acknowledged consumer rights. The theme for 2025 is “Safe Products, Confident Consumers.” The goal of this theme is to be certain (more or less) that all items for sale are in fact safe, dependable, and trustworthy so consumers can easily buy products without fear or worry... Products are an essential ownership right, and product safety has long been considered a basic human right. Consumers International plays a crucial role in overseeing and promoting World Consumer Rights Day.
